Free PDF Diff Checker — compare two PDFs, word by word and pixel by pixel
Professional PDF comparison in your browser: word-level text diff, pixel-perfect visual overlay, every changed number with its computed delta, and a CSV/JSON export. Files never leave your device.
How it works
-
Drop in two PDFs
The original and the changed version. Both are read and rendered entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded anywhere.
-
Pages are matched by content
An inserted or removed page doesn't break the comparison — pages are aligned by similarity, so page 4 is compared against its true counterpart, even if it's now page 5.
-
See and export every change
Word-level text diff, pixel overlay, every changed figure with its computed Δ%, and metadata — exportable as CSV or JSON for your audit trail.
Built for professional comparison, not a quick glance
Two PDFs can look identical and still differ in ways that matter. This tool checks four layers at once and shows its work, so nothing slips through:
- Word-level text diff — insertions and deletions highlighted inline on every page, exactly like reviewing a code change. Not "this page changed" — these three words changed.
- Changed values — every figure, price, and percentage that changed is extracted into one table with its computed delta: $4,120,000 → $4,380,000 (+6.3%). If you're an analyst checking numbers between two versions of a report, this table is the whole job.
- Visual overlay — every page is rendered and compared pixel by pixel, then overlaid so a moved logo, a swapped chart, or a changed signature block lights up instantly.
- Metadata — page count, file size, title, author, creation and modification dates, and PDF version. A document that was silently re-generated or re-authored shows up here even when the content looks untouched.
Smart page alignment
Naive tools compare page 1 to page 1, page 2 to page 2 — so a single inserted page makes every following page read as "changed" and the comparison becomes useless. Here, pages are aligned by content similarity first: an inserted or removed page is reported as exactly that, and every other page is compared against its true counterpart, even when its position shifted. Unchanged pages are listed too, so the result is a complete audit of the document, not just the highlights.
Export the evidence
One click downloads the full change report as CSV — one row per metadata change, page change, and value change, ready for a spreadsheet or an audit file — or as JSON including the word-level diff. Individual diff overlays save as PNG. Like the comparison itself, exports are generated entirely in your browser.
Private by design
Both files are opened and rendered entirely in your browser with Mozilla's open-source pdf.js engine. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is stored, and there's no account. That makes it safe for the documents people actually need to compare — contracts, financial statements, invoices, patient records, and anything under NDA.
What people use it for
- Contract review — confirm the redline you received is the only change in a 40-page agreement.
- Finance & compliance — spot an altered figure in a statement or a re-dated filing.
- Design & print — verify a proof matches the approved artwork before it goes to press.
- Documentation — see exactly what changed between two revisions of a datasheet or manual.

FAQ
Common questions
Are my PDFs uploaded anywhere?
No. Both files are opened, rendered, and compared directly in your browser using Mozilla's pdf.js — nothing is sent to Monity or any server. Close the tab and they're gone. That makes this safe for contracts, financial statements, medical documents, and anything confidential.
What does it actually compare?
Four things. Text: a word-level diff of every page — insertions and deletions highlighted inline, exactly like a code review. Values: every number that changed is extracted into a table with its computed delta ($4,120,000 → $4,380,000, +6.3%) — built for analysts checking figures. Visual: each page rendered and compared pixel by pixel with a highlighted overlay. Metadata: page count, file size, title, author, dates, PDF version — the same fields the Monity monitoring engine flags.
What happens if a page was inserted or removed?
Most PDF comparison tools compare page 1 to page 1, page 2 to page 2 — so one inserted page makes every following page look "changed". This tool aligns pages by content similarity instead: an inserted page is reported as exactly that, and the original page 4 is compared against its true counterpart, even if it's now page 5.
Can I export the comparison?
Yes — the full change report downloads as CSV (one row per metadata change, page change, and value change — ready for a spreadsheet or audit file) or JSON (machine-readable, including the word-level diff). Individual diff overlays download as PNG. Everything is generated in your browser.
Is there a page limit?
The pixel-perfect visual comparison covers the first 10 pages, which keeps it fast even on large documents. Text, value, and metadata comparison covers every page, so added, removed, or edited pages beyond page 10 are still detected — with the full word-level diff.
Why do two visually identical PDFs show a tiny difference?
Re-saving a PDF can shift text by a fraction of a pixel or re-compress images, which the pixel comparison may pick up. We ignore changes below a small noise threshold, but if you see a very low percentage (well under 1%), that's usually a re-render artefact rather than a real edit — the text and metadata results tell the real story.
Can I monitor a PDF for changes automatically?
Yes — that's exactly what Monity does. Point it at any PDF on the web (a price list, policy, datasheet, regulatory filing) and it checks it on a schedule, alerting you in Slack, Teams, or email the moment the document changes — with this same page-by-page diff. The free plan includes 3 monitors forever.
