Broken link checker

Broken link monitoring with alerts

Monity follows the links on your key pages in a real browser on every check, including links a script adds after load. You hear about a link the day it breaks, never about the same dead link every hour.

Free plan, no card. Or check a page now with the free broken link checker.

  • On the free plan
  • Links added by scripts included
  • Only newly broken links alert

New breaks, not the backlog

You hear about a link the day it breaks. Once.

Every check tests the links on the page and compares them with the check before. A link that worked last time and is now a 404, a server error or unreachable is an alert. A link that was already broken is listed in the report but never alerts again, so the dead footer link nobody has fixed yet doesn’t bury the one that broke this morning.

  • Each broken link with its anchor text, so you can find it
  • Gone (404, 410), server errors (5xx) and unreachable hosts
  • Want the backlog too? Switch on “Broken links above”

Tested the way people click

Real links from a real browser, not a crawler’s guess.

The links come from the page as it renders, so menus and buttons that a script adds after load are tested too. Each link is requested from the same browser session as the check, with its cookies, so pages behind a login are tested as the signed-in visitor sees them. And a site that refuses automated requests (LinkedIn, X and many Cloudflare-protected pages answer 403, 429 or 999) is reported as refused, not broken, because the page is fine for people.

  • 25 links to your own site on each check by default, up to 100
  • On paid plans, links to other sites too: 25 by default, up to 50
  • A refused link on your own site still counts as broken

Your important pages, on a schedule

Homepage, navigation, pricing, help centre: each one checked as often as you choose.

A task watches one page and the links on it. Give the pages that matter a task each, set how often they are checked, and the links on them are tested every time. The free plan checks up to every 3 hours; paid plans go down to every 5 minutes.

  • The same task can also watch the page for changes, speed or SEO
  • Business accounts can import many pages at once

Alert rules

Two rules. The quiet one is on.

“Newly broken links” alerts only on links that worked on the previous check. “Broken links above” is for teams that want to hear about the backlog as well; it waits for two checks in a row, because a destination that times out once is a slow server, not a dead link.

Examples

Ask for it in a sentence. Hear about the link that broke today.

Tell the assistant what to watch, or switch the skill on in a task’s settings. Alerts go to the channels you turn on for the task.

  • Check the links on coastalcrm.com every hour and tell me when one breaks
    Slack · #website
1 newly broken link — https://coastalcrm.com/integrations/zapier (HTTP 404). The integrations page moved in last night’s release; the homepage still linked the old address.
  • Watch the links on our help centre, partner links included
Microsoft Teams · Support · Content
2 newly broken links — https://partners.example/northwind (unreachable); https://press.example/2024/northwind-launch (HTTP 410). External links need a paid plan; they rot on someone else’s schedule.
  • Tell me about any broken link on the Fieldnote pricing page, new or not
    Email · web@fieldnote.com
Broken links above: 2 (threshold 0, 2 checks in a row). The backlog rule, switched on by the person who asked for it.
  • Tell me when a link on the Fieldnote docs homepage breaks
    Webhook · Docs pipeline
1 newly broken link — https://fieldnote.com/docs/api-keys (HTTP 500). The payload carries a skillAlerts list a script can turn into a ticket.

Coastal CRM, Northwind and Fieldnote are example companies.

FAQ

Questions about broken link monitoring

What is broken link monitoring?
Testing the links on your important pages on a schedule and getting an alert when one stops working, instead of running a one-off scan every few months. Monity tests the links on the task’s page on every check and alerts you about links that broke since the check before.
Does it crawl my whole site?
No. Each task tests the links on its own page, the links a visitor meets on that page. Give the pages that matter (homepage, navigation, pricing, help centre) a task each. For a one-off scan of a page and a few pages behind it, use the free broken link checker.
Why is a link “refused” and not broken?
Some sites answer automated requests with 403, 429 or LinkedIn’s 999 while serving the page to people normally. Calling those broken would alert you about working links on every check, so they are listed as refused instead. On your own site a refused link still counts as broken: you control it, and visitors can’t follow it either.
How many links does it test?
Up to 25 links to your own site on each check by default, the ones a reader meets first; you can raise that to 100. On paid plans, links to other sites can be tested too: 25 by default, up to 50. Every link is a request, so more links make the check slower.
Does it find links that JavaScript adds?
Yes. The links come from the page as it renders in a real browser, so menus, buttons and widgets that a script adds after load are tested like any other link.
Is it on the free plan?
Links to your own site, yes: the Broken link checker is on every plan. Testing links to other sites needs a paid plan or the 7-day Business trial.
